Nature and recreation

The inland area consists mainly of polders. What used to be water is now land encircled by dikes – the Omringdijk (encircling dike ) being the oldest. Man and animal live closely with one another in what is usually a combination of past and present day agriculture, green pastures with cows and sheep, alternating with traditional Dutch farmhouses and villages. A variegation of colour begins in the spring as a result of the flowering bulb fields.

The North Sea coast of the peninsula is characterized by the natural surroundings of the woods, dunes, polder landscape, beach and the sea. Although most of the area borders one another, the differences in flora and fauna are startling.
